    Unauthorized cargo

    Humans reached Mars with machines, food, and plans for a city. When the lander opened they found a grey cat asleep inside their best container. Nobody had listed him. Nobody had to.

    The sitting

    He stepped out, looked across the empty red planet, and climbed straight back into the box. Two scientists tried to lift him. He held the rim with both paws and became, for practical purposes, part of the crate.

  3. 03

    Cat law applies

    The rule is short: if I fits, it’s mine. The box was his. The pallet under the box was his. The ground under the pallet was his — and the ground kept going for four thousand miles.

  4. 04

    Tenancy begins

    The colonists were no longer colonists. Every rover stops at the crate for inspection. Every rocket brings tuna before landing. He arrived as freight and became the owner of a planet.
